Picking for Profit: Succeed as a Modern-Day Picker – Troy Howerton

“With the rapid growth of the Google+ social network and the positive impact that it’s having for authors and photographers who self-publish, I’m always delighted to see reviews of works from Skoobebooks authors. Obviously, glowing reviews are preferred! This piece from Stephanie Wanamaker  sums up the concise wisdom of the book.”

Stephanie Wanamaker – July 5th, 2012 — I have just finished a book Picking for Profit about an occupation that would be perfect for me except for one thing: I don’t have a vehicle or a driver’s license. But I am unemployed, computer savvy, a smartphone owner, persuasive and great with people. Here is a quote from the book that should convince you that picking up people’s junk and reselling it can be a dream job and be much less stressful than having to work at a corporation with the same hours day in day out. Page 119 states, “The decaying economy, and the ghastly unemployment statistics, the old truism about one man’s junk being another man’s treasure has never been more apt.” And did you know that picking is the second oldest profession? Here is the definition of a Picker “A professional trader in everyday commodities, collectibles, and other new and pre-owned goods.”

In just 7 short chapters written in a conversational style, you will learn how to make a great deal of money with very little capital needed. This is all you will need to start.

  • Workbench
  • Black sharpies
  • Cheap 30-60 lb scale
  • Small tool kit
  • Business cards
  • Tie down straps or rope
  • Internet connection and cell phone (preferably with ebay app)
  • If no smart phone, digital camera
  • Transportation

After this and setting up accounts on Paypal, Ebay and Craigslist, you are ready to start selling. At the very minimum, you should make $20 an hour, with more experience you should hit 3 digits an hour. This depends on whether picking is a full time or part time job for you. The book has ‘Key Points and Tips’ in every chapter.

Garage sales can be the highest profit margins. The author tells of a time when he got a whole garage of castoff items from an ex- boyfriend for 20 bucks and sold everything for $475 eventually!

After reading this informative and entertaining how- to book and watching Season 1 of American Pickers (available on Netflix Streaming) I would feel comfortable doing this for a living. I would if I had an partner with a car!

I would give this book 8.5 out of 10 and would read any others that the author wrote. He is very knowledgeable about the subject and has a humorous, succinct style of writing.

  • I just read the book review! Awesome, very very impressed! I am an avid reader and learned speedreading in California in the fifth grade, so I am no stranger to book reviews. This ranks right up there with the best of them. And for the record, I LOVE American Pickers, and watch it all the time!
